    It is not required but is suggested, similarly you are not required to do any updates but you really should. With kernel updates you usually get better stability, more functionality, and all kinds of fixes.

    Many, if not most, Linux distributions now have an automated process to update the kernel for you. The process may vary, what distribution are you running?

    I think Vector uses gslapt, or slapt-get for package management:
