Where do I start ?
Hello, I am totally new to this Linux and as yet have not installed it basically because I do not yet know how to find one that will work with the computer I want to install it on.
I followed some links that led me to more versions but this only led to more confusion.
I wish that each version of linux had its basic Hardware requirements listed so then I know I might be able to give it a go eg. processor, Hard disk space required, Memory required etc. Similar to what you find on a box of prepackaged software.
It would be good if I could simply type Linux version for AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 448.0MB Ram, S3 Virge PCI (325) videocard, 2Gb Harddrive
And a list of linux versions would show.
Even if the person who greated a version of linux just listed the computer they tested it on.

Your limit there is really the harddrive. 2GB isn't a lot so that will mean you will need to pick a lighter distro. For your CPU and RAM you could try something heavier but you will be able to devide between latest and greatest or lighter more functional stuff.
The best thing to do is to get a few live discs if you can. They will run in RAM and you get to test it out. Try the following :-
DamnSmallLinux (very light)
Ubuntu (Not so light)
Puppy Linux (ultra light and resembles Windows)

Thank you for your replies. I think I give Puppy Linux the first try after I have dowloaded the files and when I have time after the weather clears (thunderstorms). I have found a Puppy Linux Home page.
