Help!: Intallation of hp scanjet 3970
Hello.
I am trying to install my scanner.
It is a hp scanjet 3970.
My operation system is "SimplyMEPIS 6.5"/Linux.
What did I do, up and till now?:
1.) Reading about "Sane", and about installing the hp scanjet 3970 on Linux.
2.) I downloaded and installed the following programs:
hp3900-sane1018_src_0.7.tar.gz
hp3900-series_0.9.tar.gz
hp3900-stdalone_src_0.6.tar.gz
I downloaded:
sane_1.0.14-5_i386.deb
and tried to download it with Kpackage, but got a message that it was not able to do it, becaus of the dependencies of:
libxrandr2
libxfixes3
libxdamage1
libusb-0.1-4
libpango1.0-0
libgtk2.0-0
libglib2.0-0
libgimp2.0
libfontconfig1
libcairo2
libc6
libatk1.0-0
But obviously, these are installed on my computer.
This is the description of Sane:

This package includes : o xscanimage, a scanner graphical frontend with GIMP 2.0 support o scanadf, a command-line frontend for scanners with Automatic Document Feeder o xcam, for acquiring images continuously from cameras. . An alternative to xscanimage called xsane is packaged separately. . The scanner frontends use SANE. SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is free and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The current source code is written to support several operating systems, including GNU/Linux, OS/2, Win32 and various Unices and is available under the GNU General Public License (commercial applications and backends are welcome, too, however).

Hello.
I am still hoping, some nice person can give me a helpful hint/idea how to continue to proceed.
I can't see through it properly, right now.
Is there a other way, than with "Sane"? As I can not get Sane installed.
And also: What is a "stand-alone"-installation? -I only want my scanner up and running, it does not have to be perfect, with all the options: I could configure/update that later, once I have it working.
Thank you, for your attention. And thanks, in advance, for taking some time to look into this matter. Probably a easy thing, but I just can't figure out, what to do next.
Kind regards,
Alexander

All you should need to do is download HPLIP which comes with the hp toolbox for copying, scanning etc. From the command line as su:
Then, look in your menu for the hp toolbox. Hope this helps.Code:yum install hplip

I can't help directly because I've never run a scanner under Linux so don't know anything about it, or sane. However, here's a link that might help you to get your scanner running:
SourceForge.net: HP Scanjet 3900 series (SourceForge.net: HP Scanjet 3900 series)

Trying the backend in Kooka
Hello Ozar, and thank you, for your reply.
First of all, to make a long story short, at first:
Recapitulation/Summary:
It is all about trying the backend (SANE) in Kooka (which is the default scan program).
(There are also other scan programs, as „xsane“, or „xscanimage“. But, well, I do have „Kooka“, and not the other ones. „Kooka“ is installed on my operation system by default. So I will be using that scan program. This scan program, the so called „Kooka“, used together with the backend SANE, respectively, together with version 1.0.18 of SANE, should allow me to use my scanner.
...Or maybe I would have to add another backend, as well, to it. I am not sure. But I hope, not.
Anyway, it looks like I am able to see whole context of the procedure.
So, here is how I got to do my summary, and see the context:
As far as I can see, I have allready downloaded that software that you gave me the link for.
But I looked at that page to where your link links, once again, and realised that there where a few screenshoots on it. They had to be enlargend, by clicking on them. I clicked on the one, that is right there, near to the link for the download: What I could see, was the application and scan program „kooka“, that is my default scan program of my operation system. I could see, that when it is fully working, the application is nicely filled out with all sorts of nice windows. Well my „Kooka“ looks half empty right now, only half alive and halve usable.
Nevertheless, there is a card named „Help“, where you get to read the handbook. It is always a good idea to read the handbooks. So I started reading it, and it says the following on the first page:
It says that Kooka enables scanning using SANE libraries, and that threfor SANE, the package, must be installed to use Kooka.
Further the handbook is mentioning character recognition and the text recognition program gocr., and how to install „gocr.“.
Character recognition should be completed, so that the recognized material can be opened in the text editor Kate, etc., etc.
But then again, it looks like my scanner is not supported by SANE, lookin at the page of the supported scanners. - Or maybe, it is just not updated.
But then again, I read about someone, who did nevertheless download SANE, but had to do some tweeking, and finally got the same scanner running and working. What sort of tweeking he did, I was not able find out, till this moment.
By continuing reading the handbook, I further understand, that after installing SANE one has to do the relevant settings inside of „Kooka“, the default scane program of the operation system.
Excursion:
Buts lets go back to the page you gave the link for: The page I was talking about, at first. So what about that screenshot, and the other screenshots, there?:
This is what is says:
„Backend to control HP Scanjet 3900 series scanners in linux (hp3800, hp3970, hp4070, hp4370 and those which use RTS8822 chipset). Written in C, using libusb libraries, it runs as stand-alone application and integrated in SANE project.“
Well, it says that it is backend, and that it is integrated in SANE project.
It looks like something like this:
1.)I have the application/software „backend to control the scanner“, which is actaully part of SANE, if you will.
2.)Then I have SANE downloaded (and installed?)
I installed this about SANE:
hp3900-sane1018_src_0.7.tar.gz
The „Read Me“ gives the following information:
With this document you will find the patch that modifies the stable branch of
SANE backends 1.0.18 to add the backend that allows to use hp scanjet 3900
series scanners.
Steps to install the backend are the following ones:
1- Download the sources of the stable branch of the version 1.0.18 of SANE in:
SANE - Download
2- untar the downloaded file into the wished directory:
tar xfz sane-backends-1.0.18.tar.gz
3- Go to the generated directory:
cd sane-backends-1.0.18
4- Copy the patch into sane-backends-1.0.18 directory:
cp <path>/hp3900-sane1018_0.7.diff
5- Apply the patch:
patch -p1 <hp3900-sane1018_0.7.diff
6- If you want to compile only the backend for hp3900 series scanners type:
export BACKENDS="hp3900"
7- Compile and install SANE in traditional way typing:
./configure
make
make install
Backend is still in development status. So all scanner functions are not
implemented and due to it's a bit unstable, you may need to reset scanner
after using it.“
Final thoughts/conclusion:
Well it looks to me, as if I have downloaded „the right SANE“, partly installed it, but that I did not actually complete the installation as instructed in the „Read Me“-file (numbers 3.) till 7.)).
So that I am able to scan using the SANE libraries, I must get my scan application „Kooka“ to help me do this.
I understand now, that I would have to do the following proceedure:
1.)Complete the installation of SANE.
2.)After that is done, I will have to do all the necessary settings inside of the scan program „Kooka“.
3.)When SANE is installed properly, and „Kooka“ configured properly, my scanner should be
able to get recognized, respectively detected, and therefore, I should be able to get my scanner working then.
Here, again, the summary, that I brought at the beginning of this post:
Recapitulation/Summary:
It is all about trying the backend (SANE) in Kooka (which is the default scan program).
(There are also other scan programs, as „xsane“, or „xscanimage“. But, well, I do have „Kooka“, and not the other ones. „Kooka“ is installed on my operation system by default. ...Or maybe I would have to add another backend, as well, to it. I am not sure. But I hope, not.
Thank you, for your attention.

By default, you should have xsane too. Try that and see if it works for you and if you like it. Xsane has never let me down.

Hello dear Drapper Dan.
You recommend to download „HPLIP“.
For all those, not familiar with this expression, inclusive me as well, „HPLIP“, means:
„HP Linux Imaging and Printing“.
I chequed out, what you recommend, gave in the command, but then realised, that I must of already have it, default, in my operation system: It is called: „HPLIP Toolbox/Printer Toolbox“.
Surprisingly, noone ever mentioned the HP toolbox before, trying to install the same printer as I have. Anyway, let us continue with exploring that toolbox...:
By clicking onto the toolbox-icon, you get two windows, one over each other:
First window: „HP-Device Manager – No Installed HP Device Found“
I did try to set up the device (my scanner), but I did not succeed.
I states on that window, that the device will only appear int the Device Manager, if the device is installed with „hp : CUPS backend“...
So thats it, for the moment. I did not continue to follow that issue/task any further.
So I shut that window, and whent to the next one, which was waiting behind of the first window:
The so called „Refreshing Device List – HP Device Manager“.
Clicking on all those cards that showed up there, where fruitless attempts, as empty and mostly not activated, etc..
So I went over to the left colone (please see, from number 2.) on):
1.)„Set up new device“, is not possible at the moment.
2.)I looked into: „Configure“, then „Settings“, then „Function Commands“, where it also says:
„Configure what commands to run for device functions“.
3.)On that same card, ist says interestingly: „Scan Command: kooka“.
4.)Ok: Thanks. I thought: That was it, that is all. But then I had a look into „Help“, and found this:
5.)Clicking on „Contents“ showed you a web page, saying „file not found“, so I went back and choosed:
6.)„About...“, and a very good looking window appeard: „HP Device Manager – About“, with a big title: „ HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP). So: It looks good, and I have a good impression, and feel comfortable again. So let's have a closer look:
7.)Full of hope and curiosity, I pess the „OK“ button. But it turns out to have been a great illusion: I am back to where I have already been once, and it only shows one of those cards again, the „Panel“-card, with „Front Panel Display“, which is empty.
8.)So, end of this trip, for the moment. It brings me to nothing.
That is probably why no one else mentions this toolbox before, for setting up the scanner.
- Probaly just the wrong way. Maybe good, for later.
So this looks like no good, and that I am on the wrong track.
Anyway, many thanks, for recommending to use the „HPLIP“-toolbox: It was worth a try, and looked very promising at first.
Kind regards,
Alexander

Hello dear Dapper Dan, thanks, for your post.
As far as I could figure out, "xsane" is a scan program, equally to "Kooka".
One of these programs, according to your preferences/choice, you have to use together with the right version of the backend SANE that corresponds with your scanner model, and then it will allow you to use your scanner. Or something like that, I have understood.
Well, I shall have a look, if I do have "xsane" as you say, as default in my operation system.
But anyway, I have got "Kooka", which has more or less the same functions, and will be able to serve me as well. I will just be happy, very soon, when my scanner will be up and running.
If I will think later, that "xsane" would be better for my needs, etc., I could still use that one.
But first I just want do anything that enables my scanner to get moving and working and to get to scan.
The scaner is in good working order, and it is attached to the laptop, ant to bus bar (electricity).
Thank you, so much.
I will report later, how I was able to complete the installation of SANE.
I must have SANE installed completely, before I can even think about which scan program that I prefer: If it will finally be "Kooka", or "xsane", or "xscanimage", or whatever sort of scan program...
Anyway, many thanks, again, and it looks like by getting into this matter, deeply into this matter, I get more familiar with it, and will be able to do the right and the required steps.
Cheers.
Kind regard,
Alexander
