Are you sure CUPS is not loading?
I was thinking that Mandriva installed and loaded CUPS by default.
I've never run a scanner under Linux but I think you need the sane package installed for that.oz

Hello.
I am not familiar with your distro.
I do have a problem as well with installing my scanner to a Linux OS.
I would have try to sort out the printer problem first. Get that running first. Then I would secondly handle the scanner issue. Or vis versa, but look at it as two different matters/jobs to do.
You will have to look into the website of SourceForge.net and find your drivers for your printer according to the distro that is based on Mandriva (Debian?).
Further, you will also find the programs/files for downloading, for your scanner, on SourceForge.net, as well.
And here comes the special thing about your scanner: You will probably need to get a download of "Sane", so that your computer will be able to find your scanner later.
So that other members would be able to help you, and be of some use, you would favorably have to say, models of your printer and scanner, as well as note a few of their relevant specifications. Just give as much relative information as possible, so that other members can get into the problem, diversificate and anlalyse it, etc.
In fact, the information you provided us up and till now, is poor and insufficiant. Dig out more, and give out more.
Ok: Now go from what I said, and go from there. At least you have some sort of orientation now.
Another thing: To say it franc: You are trying to do two very time consuming jobs at the same time. Don't overdo things. One after the other job/task, and step by step. You will achieve successfully.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Alexander

It appears that your scanner is not supported under sane according to their website:
Scanner information
Your printer only works "mostly" under Linux according to OpenPrinting.org:
OpenPrinting database - Printer: Epson Stylus C84oz

Hello (let's make it short too...
):
As you are new to Mandriva: Play around with it, get familiar with it.
Find out, what sort of applications, etc. that you have to configure either your printer, or your scanner.
You could already try to do some configurations/settings, so that you already have something done. Everything adds to a whole. At the end, it will work together, and your external devices will work.
Your printer is easier to get working: Do that first.
Your scanner will require a little more effort. But it can probably also be installed at the end.
So keep us informed about all the little steps that you where able to do, and about what you where able to achieve, etc.
Just communicate with us. But a little more, than up and till now.
Do more research as well. Play more around. Do more.
Write more, in your next post. More information. More results, more facts.
...More, more, more,...: It wasn't enough. Thank you.
Don't forget to have fun as well, while doing it.
Cheers, see you later,
Alexander

mandriva
Sorry to hear you're giving up. Just a note.....I think you will discover that hopping from distro to distro will only prolong your pain. I have used Mandriva for business and installed it on over 50 random PCs over the last 2 years and Mandriva has the best combination of installer, cutting edge apps, good repositories, stability, user base and forums, software installation, and last but not least the Mandrake Control Center which is a GUI control center for many administrative tasks that you are going to have to do manually in other distributions.
Also KDE and CUPS have nailed most of my all in one printers....
Good Luck
