Is it possible to use the internet in shell-mode?

Hey, I'm pretty new to Linux, I know some of the basic commands... But I was wondering: Can you connect to the internet while in shell mode (You know, with the black background, and the [user@localhost bin]$ ) Or is that beyond my skill level?

    Thanks in advance,

    Napoleon

the command ping or tracert, nslookup, and nmap are used not to display a site in konsole mode but to check if a site responds(ping) or the route to reach the site(tracert=>in linux it is traceroute) and nmap is used to check the ports opened in network services...
