Slax
I Created a live ISO disk of slax and it boots up fine I login root, toor, startx and all that jazz. The desktop jingle plays through audio but the screen stays black. No desk top! Any one know what the diagnosis may be? Any one have a solution? I think perhaps the video card is not supported? Or it's just not reading the driver? I don't know. Here is my system and what it's running. Please help if you can.
System model: Dell Dimension 8300
BIOS: Pheonix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 AO7
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.60GHz
Memory: 256MB RAM
Page File: 234 MB Used, 391MB available
Direct x version: Directx9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Slax With NO Desktop?????
I'm choosing Slax as my first Distro and I made a disk and everything boots up fine. I login root toor startx all that jazz. The little jingle plays through audio but the screen stays black. NO DESKTOP atall. I'm wondering if there is a problem of compatability with my video card (Nvidia Gforce4) or if it's just a faulty disk. I made another disk but had the same problem. Perhaps the download was corrupted I don't know if anyone can think of something I'm missing and offer some help I'd appriciate it. Thanks Jay

Welcome to the forums!
You could try experimenting with some of the kernel boot options that are available to you through the F-keys right before the CD begins to boot into the system. I think the F-1 key might give a help menu, too.
Here's a listing of boot options for Slax but I'm not sure how current the list might be:

It sounds like it might be a video/graphics issue, so I'd look closely at any options related to them.oz

Hi and welcome!
Yeah it's probably your graphics driver causing this. The difficulty is that it's on a LifeCD, so you wont be able to edit your config files. The cheatcodes Ozar brought up are a good bet.
But isn't there supposed to be an option at boot time, to chose Failsafe Graphics (vesa) mode? Can't tell an OS by it's GUI
