    upgrade vs update

I'm running CentOS5 and have been trying to figure out what the difference is between the yum parameters upgrade and update.

Looking at the man page it outlines that upgrade is the same as update whilst taking into account the obsolete flag.

I this has been bothering me for about half a year and I look on and off to try and figure it out. I just spend another 1.5 hours and seemed to get nowhere. I learnt some other stuff like yum 2.4.x has takes into account the obsolete flag by default but quite frankly I could have gone my whole like not knowing that and I wouldn't of cared.

I also looked in the RedHat docs but it doesn't explain what "obsoletes" means.

I have seen it in the yum config file i.e obsoletes=1. Once again I don't know what it means. And trying to find out is extremely frustrating as I can't get the answer.

I'm not sure what they mean, but I usually consider a Linux version change as an upgrade, and simple package changes as updates.

Maybe someone else will have the whole scoop on it for you.
