Semi new to linux, need a distro
Ok, so I have a Pay by Touch box, or rather two of them from a Jewel Osco store that I got from an IT guy I know who works to install these things. He originally removed the boxes from the store because they didnt work, and the problem was simply bad power supplies. He has since given them to me to do as I please with. I cannot ask him for the user name and password to log into the install of XPe that is on them for another week as he is out of town.
When he gets back he will be providing me with all the drivers for them and those passwords but until then I want to play around with linux.
i have tried DSL on this box and have used Mandriva before, but DSL just doesnt sit right with my tastes and Mandriva is just too big. They have room for one more stick of ram but i wont know what type I need until I get the full specs for them.
The boxes have a 667 mhz processor and 110Mb of ram in each one, and what I need is something that boots VERY fast off of a USB flashdrive, and will (or can) boot directly into a audio/video player that would support a touchscreen. Right now with XPe they boot in about 10-15 seconds flat, and once I get the admin and password for them I will use the roadrunner software. Keep in mind these are to be used as carputers.

Welcome to the forums!
Check out the favorites polls at the bottom of this thread and maybe you'll find the distro that suits your tastes and hardware.
Hope you enjoy experimenting with Linux...oz

Well, umm, thanks for the quick reply but this is more of a specific case. And i could go through and search for and test every distro I can find, but that would take ages.

No offense but did you guys even read my post?
Did the quiz and lo and behold it was worthless. Gave me a list of distros i have used and I know will NOT work on the machine im using.
I could use DSL (maybe) but I need touchscreen support and a program similar to roadrunner
The touchscreen thing is only a side note for now though, this will be used for an in car computer setup and I can live with a trackball.

Well don't give up... maybe someone will reply that has the same hardware and likes the same things in a distro that you do, and then you'll have your answer.
Best of luck, and have fun with it...oz

Vector Linux runs on a pentium III with 96mb ram and 2-4gb
hard disk. I am trying it now and apart from some wireless issues,
I really like it. It is based on Slackware.

A lighter weight alternative to Ubuntu is XUbuntu which I also like
but I don't know if it is as light as Vector.

I don't know if they will support touch screens or if they can be
configured to boot directly to a media player thoughIf we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
