    gtkpod

so my mom gets an ipod and I thought that gtkpod would work like a charm...seemed to do so until the very end. I went ahead and installed it via vnc, she plugs in ipod nano and it comes up perfectly. I add songs, click "save changes" seems to work with no errors at all. She unplugs that nano and it says that there is no music on it....she plugs it back in and gtkpod is showing music still. Any help would be appreciated.

Taken directly from the gtkpod TROUBLESHOOTING file:
    Code:
Files copied to gtkpod but they don't appear in the database (0.80,
    Tony Williams)

    I'm having a problem that I wonder if you've seen. I've setup
gtkpod. launch it and add files. I can hear the ipod harddrive
spin up. If I go onto the ipod directly I can see the space being
used and can even see the new files on the ipod. However the ipod
interface doesn't show the new files and gtkpod keeps telling me
    that there are orphaned files.

    Solution:

I finally figured out the problem. In my fstab I had the filesystem
set to 'auto' and it was mounting as msdos instead of vfat. I
specified vfat in fstab and voila! I'm a happy happy man.
    See if that works.

    if it auto mounts?

I didn't alter the fstab at all, it auto mounted and showed up on the hard drive mounted to /media/DIANE (name of ipod). Should I enter an fstab and go from there? I tried using Amarok also and it's the same problem, the only thing that was different between amarok and gtkpod was that I couldn't eject the ipod right when I used gtkpod (always said failed to eject or something like that) but with amarok it ejected with no problem. I read online that this can happen if itunes was used to begin with (switching between software) and that a reset would fix it but that didn't seem to work either....thanks for the input

Well, if it is the formatting issue, then the problem would exist in any client that you use.

Try checking for a sort of Administration option that controls the mounting of devices. If it's set to auto, set it to vfat instead.

    What distro are you using?

    Gutsy

She's on Gutsy. If it auto mounts will it still show up in fstab? When I looked I didn't really see it in there but I can look again if it should be in there. Will it only be there if it's mounted? I'm a little unclear on how it is auto mounting because most places that I am reading is saying that I should add a line to the fstab. Thanks

You could run mount in a terminal after the
ipod is connected to see how it was mounted.

I'm no ipod user, so it's just by chance that I recall this new item from
slashdot: Slashdot | Apple Cuts Off Linux iPod Users

Apparently, Apple changed the database format, which produces the
symptons you describe. The news is from last years September, so maybe
(if this really is the problem, i.e. if your Mom's ipod is a recent model)
maybe there is a patch for gtkpod or something.

    good luck, kai

    confirmed and possible solution

I have looked around and seen that this is more than likely the problem. I won't have access to try until tomorrow but I'm running on the assumption that it is Apple's issue with open source (interesting since they often run Unix type setups). I think a lawsuit is the only way that these money gougers are going to start respecting open source. I found a possible solution for anyone else experiencing the problem.
