    dhcp problem

so i have installed ubuntu 7.10 on a new desktop computer.
i have comcast cable internet. the desktop is brand new asus m2a-vm hdmi it has 100m Gbit lan ATI radeon x1250 graphic built into the motherboard with an amd athalon 6400 64x2 dual core cpu i have 2 gig ram and what not. i have updated the bios to 1603 from 502as well. i have not installed any of the drivers that came with the cd for the mother board as i do not know what to do in that area. my friend does not know how to sett linux up on a new system and niether do i.
i have tried setting it through the network settings but does not change any thing
i do have my laptop running 7.10 studio edition and it all works fine but i just deleted windows from it and put linux on it.
do i have to set up raid or anything to finish the setup on the new computer

    1. Do you have the computer connected to the Internet cable/cord?
    2. Did you try

    Code:
    sudo dhclient
at the commant prompt / terminal?

    What does it say?

    3. Could you paste the output of lspci?
    4. What does

    Code:
    ping google.com
    give you?

    5. What does the output of

    lsmod
    say?

how are you connecting to the internet? are you using a router to share your connection? If you aren't, every time you plug in your modem to the computer you want to access the internet on, you have to restart the modem, instead of having to do this its easier to get a router
