I Need Ubuntu On My New Laptop

    Hi everyone!

Total newbie here. bought an Acer Travelmate 6252 with Linpus Linux installed. The package also comes with a Resource DVD.
After boot up, last 2 lines is:
Linpus Linux Basic Edition v9.2 b070607c
    [root@localhost /]#

I already managed to change the BIOS to boot from DVD drive 1st.

    My question,
    1) do i have to uninstall Linpus in order to install Ubuntu?
    2) can i install Ubuntu with a partition to install windows later?

Thanks in advance for ur help.

    1) No. It will just install over the top.
    2) The normal advice is to install Windows first and shrink it. Windows can be very greedy and will want to take over the whole disk. But have a look at "The definitive dual-booting guide: Linux, Vista and XP step-by-step"

What you have here is a textual login. That is not an error. It's peculiar, but not an error. You may not need to give up on this install. Try:
    Code:
    startx
You can easily overwrite it with Ubuntu though, if you so choose. But it's always best to install Windows first. Once Windows is settled, you can add any flavor of Linux quite easily. The other way around is very very difficult.
Can't tell an OS by it's GUI

A friend helped me install Windows XP today and instead of installing the Ubuntu CD i handed him, he then installed Fedora as he's more familiar with it(he's using it).

After that when he rebooted, and instead of the GRUB, XP loaded. He then tried something(i dont know what). After that, instead of GRUB, Fedora loaded instead.

Now I brought home my laptop and want to try installing Ubuntu on my own. How do i begin?

    Hi !

Lets check existing partition structure of your Hard Disk first. Boot up Fedora and log in as root user. Open Terminal/Konsole and execute this
    Code:
    fdisk -l
    Post output here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I can't log in, at the "Welcome" screen there's an icon with my username. I entered my username with blank as the password(my friend says that during installation, he didn't enter any password) but the result "Incorrect username or password. Letters must be typed in the correct case."

He did inform that besides XP and Fedora, he had partitioned another 40GB.
Can I install Ubuntu in that partition?

You can install Ubuntu on existing Fedora Partitions but you must be a bit careful. Boot up from Ubuntu CD and execute this in Terminal
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
Post output here. Above command will ask for password. Hit Enter key.

Select Start or Install Ubuntu. Machine will boot up from Ubuntu CD and give you nice Desktop, Menu etc. You can test hardware internet connection etc. It wont change anything unless you click on Install Icon on Desktop.

    Select Terminal in Menu.
