    Unbunto or Freesuse

I have been a regular windows user sinc I was born. Now looking at vista I really want to change.. So what's better than free right? So linux! i thought. ANyway it's a lot more confusing than it looks. I've narowed it down to eithere Unbunt, don't know which type yet (help would be apreciated), or freesuse. tHis will be runnign on a laptop and I personnaly like to play music and download it onto ma mp3, browse teh web and write stuff with word. Also! I hav a question which is probably really stupid.

    Hi and Welcome !

Both Ubuntu and SuSe are newbie friendly distros. I would suggest you to try LiveCD of both and check which one you like the most.
SuSe and Ubuntu doesn't support proprietary media formats out of box but its very easy to install Codecs of mp3, CD/DVD, .dat and other formats in both distros.
    Try Ubuntu 7.10 ( Gutsy ) or SuSe 10.3.

There are a lot of Linux native games available and you can run Windows based games using Wine or Cedega. Results may vary though.
I would suggest you to go for dual boot. Keep Windows OS for a while and install Linux on another Partition. Linux installer will detect Windows OS and you have choice to boot up either OS at startup.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Yes. As casper mentioned, there are plenty of native Linux games available, as well as some emulation and translation options for those designed for MS Windows. These threads might help you:

Download and burn the live CD images - that way you can try the distros without installing them on your PC ... If you don't link that distro just remove the CD & reboot the PC

    You can get Ubuntu here:

    Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu

Note that the "alternate desktop CD" (text-based installer) is NOT a liveCD, but system installer only.

If you don't have any free space on your hard drive, you can use Disk Management in Vista to shrink the partition that Vista resides on to make room for Linux, then install Linux with a dual boot option (pick Vista or Ubuntu) when your system starts.
