    upgrading ram reducing my speed

    hI
i have this weird issue with ram.. i have an old pc with me, its a pentium550mhz intel i810 mothermotherboard and it had 128 mb sdram. so recently i thought of upgrading it to 512mb ram. so i bought this 256mb X 2 sticks. its all 133 mhz. ie same speed.
now the problem is ..when i put this 512 mb ram.. my booting time takes almost 20 minutes.. so i checked it with only 256 mb in the slot.. then it took almost 7-8 mins.. but initially when i had only 128mb ram..it usedto take like 2 - 3 mins only... i use ubuntu 6.04

    can anybody help me out
    thank u

After booting, how much ram do you have available?

Maybe one of the modules is broken, try them separately.

Maybe there is an specific timing problem with that concrete model of ram and your board. Try googling for both and see if there's anything.

You might also be able to tweak the ram timing on your bios or via jumpers on your motherboard and see what happens.

We can try. But we need to know the manufacturer and model of your ram sticks and your mother board so we can research a bit more.

Many distros come with a utility called Memtest86 on their install media. I would suggest running that to get a full breakdown on any issues you are having with your RAM.

Does your BIOS POST check all your RAM - that's the only reason I can think of that would make startup times increase with an increase in RAM?

    Welcome to the forums, natvie!

Just curious... are you dual-booting by chance? If you are, does the same thing happen under a Windows boot?
