Expunging my old windows box of it's curse
I have an old windows box that im trying to install linux on. I want to try to partion it to save windows in case i need it for any other. I have tried using the Ubuntu installation disc to partion and got lost, tried using gparted but it the GUI didnt work with it, tried using partion magic and it also didnt work. What linux can i install on my computer with a good install/partion manager that i can run via cd?

Welcome to the forums!
Try using the PartedMagic LiveCD to do your partition work. It would also be wise to defragment your windows partitions before working with them.
Let us know how it goes.oz

gparted
like ozar said, use the livecd and you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure to have at least a few gigs for the OS (Ubuntu works well for new linux users but there are a few others that you can check out....try a live cd perhaps for awhile before installing). You should also make sure to give your system some SWAP, at least 512 but anywhere from 256-1024 is probably good. What are the specs on your system? You might also want to consider making a shared drive between linux and windows so you can have a place to store files that you can alter in both windows and linux.

Agreed. 512 MB of Physical is essential if you're going to use the GUI.
