What procedure are you following to get into the terminal? There are several ways to use a terminal, both inside of and outside of the GUI.

That depends on how you entered the shell. If you killed X Windows you can restart it with startx. If you switched to the terminal using a virtual console (ALT+F1, ALT+F2, etc) then sometimes ALT+F7 will bring you back to the GUI.

I'm using through the GUI (don't know many other ways of using), hitting applications -> accessories -> terminal. Then it kicks me out to the login screen!

    Thanks for the response techieMoe

Well, that is certainly a strange error. Perhaps there is something wrong with your desktop install?

I looked into some more and i think it is some bug in the Xubuntu alternative cd because there were a few other people who had computer specs like mine who had the problem. I'm going to try see if it is installed correctly that seems to be the problem for the others... i'll tell you how it goes.

If not is there any real difference between using the virtual terminal and the GUI terminal?

If I remember rightly, this is a problem with the colour depth you
have set. Try changing it from 24 bit to 16 bit.

It's an odd bug I admit.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
