Hi and Welcome !
Which distro are you planning to install? Installers of all latest distros support SATA HD and you can install Linux in SATA HD without any problem. No need to remove Windows OS from C Drive. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

RHEL 4 supports SATA disks. Type linux all-generic-ide at boot: prompt. It will load necessary drivers.

I had trouble installing Ubuntu Server on one machine with a sata drive.
I had to go into the BIOS and change the type from Auto to IDE if I
remember rightly. The actual machine is over two hours away so I'm afraid
you will have to rely on my failing memory...If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

The statement "linux can't be installed on a SATA hard drive" is definitely false. The question is, which (well, actually how old) distro are you installing. Newer distros and installers support SATA almost without exceptions.

SATA support has nothing to do with distro version.
Some SATA chipsets have been supported since practically forever, as their programming interfaces are unchanged from PATA predecessors. Others are brand-new and require new drivers from scratch.

For me the problem is, I have installed Fedora 4 in my SATA HDD. If anything connected in my ide port, then linux boots up fine. Otherwise, saying error in file system and asking for file system check. When i typed fdisk -l, it is showing as SATA detected as PATA like hda1 and hda2. I dont know why this problem is occurs.
