Hiya Ed,
Welcome Aboard!
Ok...
There are a few things floating around that *may* becausing the problem:
1) Are you using an AMD atholon Processor? You will need *at least* RH 6.2 aparently.
2) Are you trying to mount any windows drives when installing? this may be causing some grief.
Do either of the above apply? or no?
As a personal recommendation, i would go with RH 8 if possible, 6.1 is fairly old, and if your new to linux, you will appriciate the "Smoothness" of RH 8 over 6.1 IMO.

sorry... I had to go out and do my Sunday run
I have a Pentium, and I have a fresh clean 2nd hard drive.
I am not stupid, and I am working out of a book 'Teach Yourself Linux' with a disk to boot from.
Well , maybe I am stupid. What should I do?

Hiya Ed.
Course your not stupid, i get Linux troubles all the time, I beat the Sh*t out of my machine, then post the error messages on here, my point, it happens to all of us.
See the section: "4.15 Python errors during the install " on this page: http://www.redhat.com/support/resour...has-6.1-4.html
