    Question Linux UI question

    I've seen people using linux distros with a ui that doesn't resemble gnome, kde or any other interface i've seen before...except on macs. That's right, the mac dock thingy (with the icons moving around on the bottom) on a linux distro.

    Does anyone know what its called or better yet, where i can download it?

    I'd really appreciate it,

    thanks.

    AWN - Avant Window Navigator

    Where you can download it depends. What distro are you using?

    There's also ksmoothdock, kiba-dock, kdocker and many more. They are all equally useless and nice.

    There is a distro called Dreamlinux that comes with an UI like what you are talking about, if I'm not mistaken. There is also a skin for Xfce in the Xubuntu repository according to another thread I was reading a little while back.

    Thanks for the replies/info folks. As for what distro i'm using: So far i've tested Mandriva (has resolution and RAM issues), Kubuntu (has major video driver issues), OPENsuse (works fine but a little more complicated than most) and sabayon (stability issues).

    Just gotta keep getting the info/files i need for the distro i finally pick.

    It very easy to sort out problem in any distro.
    I would suggest you to try Kubuntu again. Just start a new thread about your Kubuntu problem and we will definitely help you to sort it out.

    I tried to get kubuntu working and was even successful in booting into the ui at one stage. But after a reboot I had to go thru the whole process again. As much as I would like to use k/ubuntu, that particular distro clearly can't handle my hardware.

    gpu = nvidia 8800gtx
    m/b = gigabyte p35t-dq6
    ram = 2gb of ddr3
    processor = pentium e6600

    not insanely powerful - but much faster than the average.

    Strange thing is that of the half a dozen distros i've tried, k/ubuntu is the only one i've had problems with booting. Mandriva, opensuse, sabayon, fedora livecd's all worked fine. But with kubuntu i had to use the alternate cd to install and even then i couldn't get the ui up and running without fiddling with the xserver (a rather daunting task for a linux newbie to do entirely from the command line).

    The last 2 distros i'm trying before i make up my mind is fedora (currently the front runner) and pclinuxos (not bad, but it can't recognise any of my hardrives and thus can't install, and i'm somewhat irked by the lack of a x64 version).

    Its easy to fix Graphics Card problem in Kubuntu or any other distro.
    Just press Alt+Ctrl+F1. It will drop you at command line Login Prompt. Login and execute this
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    Select supported Resolution and "vesa" driver in Drivers List. Press Alt+Ctrl+F7 and Alt+Ctrl+Backspace or reboot machine.
    It will fix Graphics problem but you have to install Nvidia driver for better Display and 3D effects. Install Ubuntu Restricted Drivers through Add/Remove Programs.
