    distro recommendation? 266mhz amd-k6 & 32mb RAM

    Hi I'm looking for a linux distro recommendation for an old junker laptop (Compaq Presario 1235)...

    Computer Specs:
    * 266 MHz AMD-K6 MMX TM Enhanced Processor
    * 512 KB L2 Pipeline Burst Cache
    * 32 MB SyncDRAM
    * Integrated 2 MB video memory
    (full specs: Compaq Presario 1235 Notebook PC - Product Specifications - c00256183 - HP Business Support Center)

    My requirements:
    * web browsing, email, word-processing, spreadsheets
    * gui installer and window manager (minimal manual configuration)
    * fastest possible distro with these requirements

    Thanks any suggestions you may have!

    Hi, ekallevig... check this poll for favorite distro for older/weaker computer hardware. It should at least give you some idea where to start.

    Let us now what you go with.

    I'm trying out Damn Small Linux right now, and it boots up ok, but there's something wrong with the graphics -- I can barely make out the text on the screen. Maybe the driver is not working? Any tips to troubleshoot or fix this problem?

    Sounds like a graphics issue so I'd look at any kernel boot options related to vertical and horizontal refresh rates, and the display resolution. Those options should be available to you through the F-keys right before the CD begins to boot into the live system.

    It turns out I needed to use frame buffering mode on startup: fb800x600

    It's pretty snappy given the limited specs, but you can't run much on 32mb of RAM
