    Sound affecting game performance

I'm currently running FC8 on my HP dv2000 notebook and all has gone smoothly so far. The only exception is when I play 3D games the framerate is determined by my sound settings. If I have them off or at low then the game runs near perfect. If I load up the sound the games are unplayable. I assume it has to be a bad driver or something because when I play music the quality is really bad as well.

I'm fairly new to this so any help would be appreciated I've switched between the different sound systems (ALSO, OSS, etc) and it doesn't change anything. How do I check if I have the right drivers installed or something?

    Thanks

UPDATE: I messed around with my sound in the SoundCard detection thing and my sound no longer works.
