Linux and satelite connections
I am considering going to a satellite connection from Wild Blue. I want to be sure that Linux will work with their equipment before I have it installed. Does anyone have any information about Wild Blue before I start?

Boy, do I ever.
Things I've learned about Satellite Internet
Run, run away. Quickly. Use a horse if you have to. Hitchhike. Whatever it takes.
Those things aside, if you do choose not to heed my warning the equipment works basically like a regular router. The install guys might give you weird looks when setting it up with Linux, but there's no hardware reason why it won't work.Registered Linux user #270181

Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the info. I am trying to get a high speed connection and the satellite appears to be the only way I can get any speed. My ISP "upgraded" their system (raised the price) but the quality of service has gone down very quickly. While I was typing this I lost my connection. I cannot get DSL or cabel. Do you have any suggestions?

I can't believe I'm suggesting this (considering the reputation these companies have) but my g/f has had pretty good service from her cellular phone provider. For $50 a month she gets either a USB or PCMCIA cellular modem that connects to the same networks as her mobile phone and gets around 800Kbps-1.2Kbps.
It's not as fast as cable or DSL, but it's faster than any bitrates I got using WildBlue. The added bonus (if you have a laptop) is that you can take your internet access along with you wherever you can get a cell phone signal. Some providers actually have instructions on how to get it set up in Linux. Others (like hers) had articles online about them. I've successfully hooked up my Linux laptop using her USB modem. It would take some work, but it's doable.Registered Linux user #270181
