Running Windows programs on Linux OS

Hello Linux Users. Im a newbie to Linux. I always wanted to try a Linux OS but was to scared because I have so many questions but nowhere to get answers until now I have allot of Windows programs, and I dont want to loose them because they cost me lots of money. Is their a Distro- OS that will run Windows programs. Or a program that you can run on Linux to run Windows programs? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome to the forums!

Any Linux distribution should be okay if you try running them under WINE:

    Wine HQ

Not all Windows apps will work but some will.

Hope they'll all work the way you want. Have fun with Linux.

Don't consider Windows & Linux to be mutually exclusive. Windows and Linux will quite happily live on the same computer (just install Windows before Linux ). Windows applications usually run better in Windows, Linux applications always run better in Linux ! I'd dual boot for a while until you get used to Linux ... that way you can keep all those Windows applications for the moment.

You can use Wine or other emulators to allow you to run Windows applications under Linux ... but they always add overheads and compatibility will never be 100%. You should really try taking a look at the applications available in Linux. I know it feels painful at the moment ... letting go of all those things you had to buy, but you will find it is soon worth your while (and you can always boot up Windows in cases when you can't find an acceptable Linux version).
Take a look at something like OpenOffice.org - you can download and install a Windows version of this to see how it compares with something like MS Office.

Here is a link to the WINE application database to check compatability with exisiting Windows applications in Linux. WINE Application Database

As Jonathan183 said, the first thing you can check is if there is a Linux application to compelete the task.
