Installing RealPlayer10 Gold on Xubuntu 6.06 - Dapper

I've managed to install Xubuntu 6.06 on my 256MHz, 500MHz ibook using the alternate install, but I'm working on making the basic install work with all the multimedia I use. My first stop was to download Realplayer10 which, once completed, left an icon on my desktop but no application was installed. I tried to double click the icon, but Linux doesn't know what to do with the file. I tried opening Synaptic Package Manager, but I don't know what to do from there.

Could someone give me the complete, detailed step by step for installing Realplayer10 Gold? You know - the "installation for dummies" version.

    thx,

    Joseph

    Have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ds?action=show

Realplayer is available from repositories. Have a "Search" in Synaptic.

    Still confused.

I tried to "search" by using the lower left button on the "Synaptic Package Manager" dialog box. I tied key words like Real and Realplayer but the only package revealed was "realpath".

I followed the link in the last reply but I'm still not sure what to do. It said something about adding canonical's commercial repository using "dep Index of /ubuntu dapper partner"

Is that something I need to do at the terminal before I can add realplayer?

All I want to do is view movies on the web and play DVD movies.

Three things come to my mind:
    1) Do you have all your repositories enabled? I don't use Ubuntu, but I believe you need the multiverse repositories to get Realplayer.
    2) Are you sure you need Realplayer at all? I don't. I use VLC for everything these days. The only thing it won't do is open Realplayer files on the BBC. Instead, I use Mplayer for this.
    3) Why are you using Dapper? This is old now, and I think you should consider installing Feisty.

Install libdvdss2 (from Medibuntu repository), win32codecs and VLC Media Player and you should be able to watch DVDs. You shouldn't need Realplayer. Have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats . For Flash across the web have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...1ddaa63439d2db

I agree with this last post. I'd just like to add that VLC doesn't need the Win32 codecs or libdvdcss - all the codecs come with the player.

Mplayer can still use them, but it doesn't need them since a long time now. It can open natively almost anything, including real media streams and flv flash videos. The bad part is that dvd support in mplayer really sucks.

I use xine for that usually.

Yes, I agree with this. However, I don't use Xine anymore to play dvds: VLC handles them fine. This software really rocks!
