    Red face all these distos

I like freedom of choice, but sometimes I wish every one could just focus on making one linux to just take over the world. I use ubuntu and xubuntu. I got both off the discs that come in linux format magazine. the best thing about linux so far ( for me) is every time i see a dead computer at someones house, I ask if i can have it... and so far, i've managed to boot them up with these discs ( where windows wouldn't LOL ) so it's a nice dirty little secret. I then try to get the person that gave me the machine to start using linux since it did revive their machine. I'm not very techy, but i'm slowly learning.

Of course, each one has his/her needs. That's why we need many flavours. For me, Ubuntu is next to useless. So, I could say that everyone should use Gentoo.

But of course you would disagree with that. The only solution is to have lots of distros. And this is just the Open Source spirit: if you don't like it, fix it, change it, patch it, compile it or do whatever you want/need.

I agree, however, that duplication of work is useless, so I would be about replicating something that's already there. But most distros have clear differences that make them unique and different to the rest of distros.

I think that some things should be unified, and that's why there's freedesktop.org to fix issues like hardware recognition (hal, dbus), desktop standards (for menus, tray notifications and cross-desktop compatibility in general, etc. etc). But distros are just different compositions done with the same basic pieces, and that's good, overall.

and agree with this as well. The one distro thing just won't work, there is always something that you could just make a bit better for the way I want to use it ... we can't even all use the same bootloader let alone a whole distro!

The one size fits all theory doesn't work for me, either. I'm very glad we have some options to choose from. I tend to think that in the long run more people are satisfied if they have options.
