Which Linux version wud be BEST on 128 RAM
Hey guys,
I've a modest system with 128 MB RAM & 2.26 GHz Intel.
I know 2.26 GHz isn't a problem as such, but 128 RAM surely is
and becomes a system-hanger/lagger most of the time.
Plz suggest what according to you would be the optimum Linux version or any other for me.

I think the biggest issue is the window manager you use, if you stick with low resource ones like xfce, fluxbox, fvwm, etc, you should be ok with the 128 ram. I find a debian net install without installing a window manager and then after getting it running in the command line, adding one of the low resource ones, you should get a pretty good system.

Trying to find the 'best' linux version for older hardware is really difficult. When I searched on the web everyone had a different choice, which I suppose is the idea of free open source software. To give you an idea. I got last week an old PII, 128Mb ram Toshiba tecra 8000. First I tried Puppy linux and it kept on hanging onthe install of video so I gave up on that. I next tried Del Linux.
The initial install was excellent. The problem was then in getting the USB, and sound to work. As it is not one the main distros I found it really difficuly getting any answers. Eventually I got through trial and error the USB working but not the sound
Now its crunch time again for me.. do I try to et deli working or try another like DSL or vector.. I am going to post a question to see what people think..
Good luck

Got the 8000 with 92M ram, DSL runs no problem. Xubuntu also runs on it as well.

I personally found Xubuntu to run perfectly well on my old laptop which had 128M RAM and a lot less processor power than 2GHz.
It detected all my hardware, even the nonstandard touch pad.
It wasn't exactly racing when I opened OpenOffice, but it worked fine.
