Hi there, welcome to the Forums!
Any distro will accommodate your needs. FireFox will take care of your browsing. Evolution is a mail program that is very similar to Outlook Express in terms of functionality. Pidgen is a IM chat program that works really well. And you can install Open Office for the other apps you referred to.
If you need to know where to start, the links in my signature should point you in the right direction.Jay

Any distro would do.
If you want to test, however, you can use many of these under windows too, so you first can try.
Pidgin is the offspring of gaim, an excelent IM client that supports lots of protocols, it's available for windows as well:
Download | Pidgin
Firefox is a good browser, and thunderbird can also be used on windows (a mail client). Both work on windows as well:
Mozilla.org - Home of the Mozilla Project
Openoffice will do for ms office docs, and much more (yes, it also works under windows, that's the advantage of writing portable software instead of visual basic crap):
www: OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite
There are lots more that can be tested in windows before you make the definitive transition: opera, the gimp and the whole kde4 desktop are some more examples that come to my mind. There are also lots of alternatives for these that have not been compiled on windows (maybe it could be done with a bit of work, but there's not been enough interest, I suppose). But you can test these to see what can you expect.
Evolution is much more complete than thunderbird because it's really a complete personal information manager, not just a mail client (it could be compared to kdepim, though I personally don't like either of them, they are great).
