Question best dist for my needs on inspiron 1720?

    Hey everyone

I'm new to the whole Linux scene but I'm bright and willing to learn. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 Notebook which I'll be using WITH Vista (for compatability reasons) and some form of Linux for some gaming, audio production and multimedia (like videos pictures and music). I've already figured that Ubuntu, OpenSUS, aurox and Mandriva are the best suited distributions for me (in that order), but I want to be sure that Ubuntu will support my drivers/hardware.

    TIA,
    Tom

    Welcome to the forums, titancow!

Take a look at the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux. OpenSuse and Ubuntu seem to be good choices in most cases for laptop users, but I hear that Mandriva and Sabayon work well out of the box with lots of them, too.

Hope you will enjoy the Linux experience.

If your 1720 is at all similar in specs to my 1520, Ubuntu will do you fine. Have a look at the things that gave me trouble here:

Thanks for the replies guys! Just responded now because I only just found the e-mail.

I'll take a look at your blog site, I actually have a relative who owns a 1520 and if Ubuntu works on that then it will probably work on mine.
