Major Foo - Formatted Linux partition from Windows...whole PC stuck
Heres what happened yesterday...
I was trying to install Supreme Commander onto XP on my other computer that also runs Ubuntu through dual boot. I found that C: did not have enough HD space to install the game and through some genius idea I decided to remove Ubuntu off my comp by formatting the whole HD. I was anyway going to uninstall it...and install another distro, so i thought why not get rid of it then.
Yes I know I was being lazy/stupid. But now when I start the comp, it wont boot anything. It says:
"
Boot From CD:
Error
Grub 17
Error
Please Wait...
"
Any Idea what to do?...Ive tried waiting...for all the good it did...Im kinda freaking out...there are important docs on that comp...sigh...

Ouch,
before you touch anything, get a LiveCD and backup all your important docs.
Maybe you want to try GParted.

If you formatted the drive I'd say your data has gone. If you formatted the partitions used by Ubuntu then you may still be able to get at your windows data. The Supergrub CD will restore Windows boot for you - unless you wiped Windows as well !
You could try something like system recovery CD to reclaim your data. If you really want to try reclaiming data then don't use the system until you can boot from one of the recovery cds. That gives you the best chance of recovering the data.
Ed: you can also use the windows install cd to fix the mbr so Windows will boot again. The instructions are posted several times on the forums and are available here.

It will display partition structure of your Hard Disk. Post output here.Code:sudo fdisk -l
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
