Can you tell us what sort of computer you have: how much RAM do you have, what video card do you use, that sort of thing. This is important because amongst the multitude of distributions, some are better suited to low-end computers; others need relatively recent machines to work properly.

Processor: 3 x Amd 64 bit
Ram: 4 GB

Welcome to the forums, duncan!
Any Linux distribution is made up of the kernel and various packages. Different distributions utilize the kernel in different ways, and include different packages and logos within their product. There are eventually numerous versions of different distributions as time goes on, as is the case with different versions of Windows.
Hope that makes sense.
Have fun with Linux!oz
