Which distro and window manager to use on this box?

    Hi,

Scavenging around through some old gear of mine i have built a box i'm thinking about dedicating to linux use. Here are my specs so please recommend me a distro and window manager accompanied by why you chose them for my box. Thanks alot, all input will be of great help due to the fact i don't know alot about this sort of thing.

CPU: Dual Pentium 3 (tualatin) 1.4@1.4 (1mb cache total)
    RAM: 3x512mb sdram pc133
    HDD: 4x250gb
GPU: Onboard 4mb (refer to below please)

I'm going to buy a pci graphics card for this box as it doesn't have an agp or pci-express slot. What card would you guys recommend? i know now you can get geforce 6200s and radeon x1300s in pci form now, and i think sparkle just released geforce 7300s and 8500s in pci too. Which should i choose? I guess they all support the same tech (except the 8500 with dx10) so speed will be the only difference between the 4.

    Thanks alot in advanced!

    Regards, Mortagen

There's nothing particularly odd about those specs. I assume this is an old server? You shouldn't have any issues running a major Linux distribution on that machine.

I would very highly recommend you buy an Nvidia card instead of one from ATI. Although the drivers for the latter have greatly improved over the years, performance and stability from the Nvidia drivers are best in Linux, IMO.

    Thanks!

That card will handle Compiz pretty well. Nvidia Driver installation is very easy in most of distros.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
