Smile Which would be the best linux?

    Hi,

I'm planning to install a linux os in my home pc.

    My PC configuration is

    Pentium Duo
    512 MB RAM
    160 GB HDD
    Windows XP

Which would be the better options for me, in terms of learning, security while surfing, career in IT industry?.

If you suggest an OS, them please tell me where can we download that?.

    Please advise.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forums tduraipkt

The which distro question comes up a lot ... try this link.

Linux Mint, Ubuntu and OpenSUSE are all good choices for someone new to Linux. More or less all versions of Linux will setup a dual boot to allow you to boot into either Linux or Windows.

You should find security is good with any version of Linux, but one thing you need to make sure is that you do not login as the root user for day to day activities.

I don't work in the IT industry but my understanding is that Redhat has tended to dominate the server installations so either Fedora or CentOS would be good to use since they are based on Redhat but are available free to download. You can take a look on the downloads page on the forums and also distrowatch.com.

    Welcome to the forums!

When it comes to Linux, "the best" is definitely a matter of opinion. You'll have to try a number of distributions and decide for yourself which one is the best for you and your hardware. All those suggested by Jonathan would be good to start with.

    Have fun experimenting with Linux.
