I know gdesklets and adesktlets. Not sure if these are still actively developed or something.

I also heard about the screenlets, which are something similar for compiz, I don't have any idea either if this is something real yet or some kind of future project. Google is your friend I suppose.

Also, kde4 is supposed to do all that karamba could do and much more via a new technology called "plasma". Since I don't care at all about it, I don't really know how mature plasma is. And I haven't any idea either on how many plasmoids are available right now. You'll have to investigate yourself, but at least now you know what to search for.
