    Exclamation which distro

    hello
i am fairly new to linux going on 8 months now i have been using pclos but due to the unreliability of their repos i am fed up i set a few packages for download overnight but wake up in the morning to find that 5 or 6 of them can't be found i have tryed other distro but was stopped becuase they don't support my dwl-g122 b1 wlan card without this i cannot access the internet and without the internet i am nothing. I used fedora for a little while but got angry with their free software thing but that was fedora core 7 now i hear with fedora 8 its gotten better. so what i am asking is your help on finding a distro with the following

    - large reliable software repo's
    - propiety drivers codecs etc is a plus
    - ralink 2500/2570 drivers (or whatever works with dlink dwl-g122 b1)
    - a nice amount of active people in the support IRC and forum
    - preferably a CD but i will download a DVD if i have to
    - other nub friendly stuff

i smell ubuntu don't you, but i have tried and tried with ubuntu and it has never worked with my card no matter what i do i get a build error or somthing while trying to compile a driver or using ndiswrapper so vanilla ubuntu is off the list

thank you for all your help i know you must get this kind of thing a lot but all help is much appreciated

Is this of any help to you?..

    setting up a dwl g122 b1 - Ubuntu Forums

You'll find that most problems are well documented within the ubuntu community and it is relatively easy to get help. Wireless cards are quite a bugbear for any flavor of linux, it is often worth just getting a compatible card or USB device

    hmmm

i guess i will give it another try once the site is back up right now its under maintenance. i remeber last time i did it i kept on getting a error 1 while doing the make command. Back in the day when i had a wired connection i wouldn't even be here. Once that new intel 16 core imbedded OS comes out in about three years now (i know someone who is a engineer for intel) linux and opensource will take off and so will wlan pens and other difficult matters in linux. intel is working on a UNIX based operating system for the embedded CPU. boy that was pointless

so like i said i'll give it a shot but i'm still open to oppions

but also what do you guys think of fedora 9 are they still open source only or do they have free propiety software in their repos

Most popular distributions these days include free (no charge) but proprietary software in their repositories, because there's simply no way around it in some cases. One of those cases is wireless internet hardware. Another is multimedia playback. Even Debian GNU/Linux allows non-free software into its repositories, albeit in a separate section specifically labeled "non-free".

If you're particularly concerned about using only free (libre) software in your OS I suggest a stricter distribution such as gNewSense, which is based loosely on Ubuntu.

You should use YAST Software Manager to install/update/remove packages in SuSe.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
