How to get started
Awesome site! I'm just looking for some direction here. Back several years ago, I was lucky enough to work for a Unix-only shop. We were a major service provider so I got to learn lots of great stuff. Unfortunately from there it all went downhill and I was stuck in moronic corporate jobs after that. So my knowledge has plummeted. I'm desperately trying to get back into the open-source environment.
I've been lucky enough to end up in a new job, with a great company. Problem, they are 110% Windows. You mention...Linux, BSD, etc. and people pee their pants. But that being said they are really good guys, so they are open to things, they just need to get a warm fuzzy. I was able to get my boss to approve letting me put a linux box on our network. I told him I needed this for network monitoring tools.
I think I'm on the right track with things, but I just want to make sure I really know what I'm talking about...My sell is give me a box, I'll install Unbutu on it, something popular, user friendly for the non-unix guys, etc., and with that I can run Snort, MRTG, NMAP, etc., and provide monitoring, better security, IDS, etc. for the network. To do all this, I don't need a really souped-up box, the OS can be loaded for free, all the tools can be loaded free, I can harden the box, etc.
What's coming back is...they talk to their normal 'pc supplier' and they are selling them RedHat with some support package for hundreds of dollars and help with 'any tools we need'.
Is Ubuntu supported at all? I think my boss is most worried we put some open-source platform and something breaks and no one can figure out how to fix it because there isn't a 1-800# to call for support...The totally non-unix guys are stuck having to support, fix, etc. this box and they don't have anyone/where to go to to bail them out....
Sorry for the long windedness...I'm just really anxious to get back learning linux and being able to do all the cool things...I really don't want to mess this up!

Ubuntu is supported by the community(forums, mailing lists, etc) and by Ubuntu's company Canonical. Check this link :
