I dont think that Sun Java would have much to do with this as its used mainly fo web pages / applets no hardware.

Use alsamixer on command line, make sure that pcm and master (at least) are not zeroed nor muted.

Code:alsamixer
Distribution: Archlinux
Processor: 3 x Amd 64 bit
Ram: 4 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT

Choose run command or press alt+f2, type "xterm" on that box. A terminal should open, type "alsamixer". The mixer should open with many vertical bars on it. Look at PCM and Master bars. They must have volume and they must NOT have "MM" below them because that would mean they are muted (regardless of the volume levels). To mute/unmute channels use the "M" key, to raise/lower the volume use the up and down arrows. To change from one control to another use right/left. To exist just ESC or q if my memory serves.
