    Haven't use any live cd for a long time. As long as it includes command dmesg that will do.

    Yes,

    If you don't have a gui tool you could try the old school methods.

    dmesg
    cat /proc/cpuinfo
    cat /proc/meminfo
    cat /proc/interrupts
    cat /pro/ioports
    free
    ifconfig -a
    netstat

    the list goes on and on...

    just don't open anything in the /proc virtual filesystem with vi or emacs etc. The kernel doesn't like that much.

    you can see systems hardware when it loads up (when you use the live cd)..

    Some systems have procinfo command that displays information about system and its configuration.
