OpenOffice is the standard office suite on most Linux distributions. It should be able to open, read, and save your Works files, as well as a number of other document formats.

If you mean .wps files, I know OpenOffice Writer can read them. It may already be installed on your system. If not, you should easily be able to install it. Abiword may also support them but I am not sure.

EDIT: Moe beat me to it.

How do you connect to your broadband? Is it just a regular network cable that plugs into a DSL modem or are we talking about a PC-card or USB modem that you have to dial?

If it's just a modem to network cable connection you shouldn't have to do anything special. Linux will just recognize it as a plain ethernet connection. If it's the other two, you'll have to do some work. It's doable, but it's more complicated than just plug in and go.

That's a little more complicated. My fiancee has one of these, and I was able to get it working in Ubuntu using this set of instructions:

Linux.com :: Get broadband wireless with Verizon EVDO and Linux
