Linux newb with a couple questions

I've been studying to take my Linux+ test so that I can add that to my resume during my job search but I was wondering how much of a difference is there between solaris and Linux flavors such as slackware or Mandriva? I so far really only have experience with these 2?

    Welcome to the forums!

What types of differences are you wanting to know about?

HAHA I didn't even think about that. Like asking the differences between a Ford and a Toyota huh? Basically looking to see what administration differences there might be. And you can be vague too. Ultimately, what I'm trying to figure out is if a person could easily administer Solaris if they were familiar with these other Linux distros?

I think the main differences that you would run into are the filesystem and the file hierarchy. Solaris
is basically a Unix clone... whereas GNU/Linux is pretty much just 'based' on Unix. There will be fundamental differences, but as the two are distant relatives, you should be able to admin one if you can admin the other.
Keep in mind, though, I don't have any personal experience in Solaris, so maybe someone else with more knowledge will pop in. Hope that helps, though!

Great info Jay. Thanks. That was what I figured but don't know anyone that knows either. I'm the one everybody comes to for linux questions and I don't know it that great.
