An easy question with no answers

I don't think that there is an easier question that could be posed to a Linux Forum than ... "How Do I Set Up A Microphone?". How is it that a linux forum never has had that question posed before. I say that because I got a BIG FAT ZERO when I performed a search on the set of words that make up the question. Is it because the question contains no mysterious gibberish jargon that is found in the lexicons of linux giants?

In any event, I am trying to get my microphone to work as I am trying to make SKYPE work under the Ubuntu 8.04 OS. Right now it doesn't although the volume controls or audio setting are set so as to make one think the microphone would work. Try as I might, I can find no intelligible answer to the question ... "How do I set up a microphone to operate properly with SKYPE ... or any other application for that matter?"

Is there an answer upon which a person can use as and actually solve the problem of a microphone recording not being capable of being played back? ... an answer that is void of undefined linux jargon?

dont get discouraged. the problem lies in the fact that getting a microphone working is simple enough but it might be more rare that people here have gotten one working with skype. I personally dont use skype. And if you did a poll here there might be a very small percentage that do. One thing you might try is posting an update to the help post you started with a link and ask for someone to explain the jargon. state that you are new with linux and dont quite understand what is being stated in the link you post. Its going to be difficult to find any help devoid of linux jargon because you are running linux but an explanation of the jargon will help further your understanding of linux.

Have you unmuted the microphone in sound properties? I think by default it is muted. Also if you have opened something else already such as a voice recorder it may have locked the microphone, so you can log out/in to get it working.

The answer doesn't lie in volume, or audio settings - it lies in Skype!

Open Skype. Check out the blue S button (bottom left)>Options> Sound Devices. My microphone doesn't work until I change Sound In and Sound Out to the version with hw in it. (hw=hardware???) (unless I'm using USB Internet phone, in which case that option appears). Make a Test Sound. Make a Test Call. Click Apply.
