    step by step instructions?

There are no such things as simple step by step instructions!
if you are a real newbie then check out the linux documentation project or alternatively buy a book.

tldp has a load of howtos and there are two I think on samba maybe more. I think it is also possible to setup unix print services on the 2000 machine and tweak the settings to allow linux based systems to print to it. But I have never done this.

May I recommend Red Hat Linux 8 Bible. and SAMS Teach Yourself Samba in 24 hours.

Both very good books. The second one covers smb and cifs theory as well as setting up samba to act as a member server (print server) in a Microsoft Domain and as a PDC.

Good luck. If you are having specific problems then post them here and people will try their best to help you. Remember to check out the samba web site as it has loads of documentation.

I guess Linux 8 means RedHat Linux 8? In that case, try running RedHat's printer configurator and add an SMB printer queue.
