alternative for flash ?
is there any alternative for adobe flash player ? I don't get it...Ive been using xubuntu on an ancient laptop for 6 months with flash player, but on this comp, that is alot newer it just will not install...I have read every faq and tried every thing people have posted on here ( and other sites ) in terminal it just says "cannot find flash player" even though it's sitting right there. a google search turned up many pages about this bug... something about not legal to distribute flash. and one error message said my system chose not to support it. which i really don't understand. so Ubuntu is running fine all my favs stored, just can't do anyting requiring flashplayer. thanx

There is GNU gnash Gnash - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF) which aims to be a free replacement for the proprietary FLASH player.
The downside is that is still not suitable for the end user yet.
You will also need a distribution with very up to date packages because it is not long that it began working.

Another one:
Swfdec Wiki - FrontPage
Right now swfdec is probably a bit ahead gnash, but neither of them is perfect. The propietary flash plugin has also its problems, as you already know. All of them are very intensive in cpu, which is why most times I just end blocking the flash plugin with flashblock, and if I need to see a flash video I just download it and watch at it using mplayer.
That will not help with interactive flash based web sites though (swf), since mplayer will only play .flv video files.
