[SOLVED] Max Sound Volume Too Low

This is the second computer I've installed Ubuntu on, and each time I noticed a significant drop in volume capability. Is that just a characteristic of these ALSA drivers I've heard of but know nothing about?

Is there a better volume management software or something I could be using to take full capability of my (budget) speakers and (integrated) sound card. I don't need really impressive super-sound or whatever, but its weird to have to sit directly in front of my computer with the speaker two feet from my ear with the volume set to max.

I'd like to be able to play a movie or something on my computer and sit on the couch and watch it without having to move the speakers so they're on the couch with me?

Does anyone else have this problem on a fresh ubuntu install? Is there a program I can install or a setting I can change that would help me?

    Thanks in advance.

I've constructed a somewhat elaborate user-error test in an effort to help determine whether linux is actually the problem here. An unbiased but slightly amused panel of judges has unanimously determined that the my hearing is fine and I am not going deaf.

At least I think that's what they said. They were gesturing rather emphatically.

What have you done as far as configuring your sound? Have you run alsamixer?
In terminal as root, type "alsamixer", adjust up. Checked all connections? Run the two commands below (consecutively) as root and post output.

    lspci | grep audio
    hwinfo --sound

    LOL, CAN YOU READ ME??

HAVE YOU TRIED TO TURN UP ALL THE FIELDS IN ALSAMIXER? NOT JUST MASTER.
THERE SHOULD BE FIELDS WITH NAMES LIKE PCM AND FRONT AND SUCH. TURN THEM TO 100% AS WELL.

    *clears throat*
alsamixer should be run in terminal. Sorry, I mean ALSAMIXER SHOULD BE RUN IN TERMINAL
