    missing codec

I'm trying to use the totem video viewer, and it says missing codecs need to be downloaded, but needs to check to see if it's restricted where I live ( or something like that ). and asks if i want to check... I click yes and a bar moves across sayding downloading...but it doesn't say to where. there is nothing on the desktop, or the few folders i looked in. so I don't know if it's doing anyting at all, or if the codecs are restricted. if it downloaded an upgrade, where do i look for it ? the codecs are at gstreamer. thanx for any help, or suggestions on aother viewers.
