heya i do apologise if i am sounding thick but ive never ever used linux before, ive tried to download aMSN messenger and i have the file in my downloads file, when i try to open the file it comes with a message that it could not be installed and to install it manually from the downloads archives.

i am pretty slow when it comes to computers so i am baffled can anybody tell me how to do this please?

Msn messenger will not work in linux its a window's program to run it you will need wine but better still linux has its own chat applications the best one being known as pidgin (not sure about the spelling) but this works on yahoo msn even googletalk

What distro are you using? It's more than likely already in your distro's repository. For example if you're using Ubuntu you can install it through Synaptic, YaST for SUSE, Yum for Fedora etc.

Also you should already have a messenger client installed. Kopete and Pidgin (formerly Gaim) work with Googletalk, MSN, ICQ etc.

    Cool

stick yea you have the right idea with aMSN

and bigtomrodney is right use a package manager instead, but he's describing awkward ones sorry.

you have an acer aspire one so you'll have to right click on the desktop to get the menu.then go to system and then Add/Remove Software.

and once your on that just go to search type in aMSN. select it and click apply. then it should install

um well thats if youve not already got it working :P

this a bit late i see you asked months ago aha but it should be relevant for others with similiar problems

First off, I'd like to point out that in these communities we typically don't call other people idiots...especially for just over looking something.

Second, even though aMSN is an option, I'd still recommend pidgin. Is there any reason you are choosing aMSN over this option?
