Hi, as you can tell I'm new to the linux world, I wonder if you can help decide which distro could be the best for me.

I have tried already Ubuntu (since 7.10) & Mandriva. I liked both distros, but I wonder which would be you recommendation for my needs.

    **System**

    Notebook model: Hp dv6605us

    OS: Win XP x64

    CPU Type: AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55, 1800 MHz

    Motherboard Chipset: nVIDIA nForce 7150M-630M

System Memory: Hynix 512MB & Kingston Value ram 2GB for a Total of 2496 MB

    Video Adapter: GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M (256 MB)

    HardDrive: 160GB, External 2x Seagate 120gb, External WD 500gb & External WD 1TB

I'm a Web+ Graphics Designer & Photographer. I work with Photoshop as well as Dreamweaver, I know Gimp is pretty good, I have done before, also i know can emulate PS and/or DW using Wine (done it before).

I thing a have a pretty decent system, I have never had a problem with Ubuntu neither Mandriva.

which distros would you recommend for performance, security & stability

By the way, I have explore the forum, I think's pretty cool, thats why I decided to register myself.

    Thanks in advance.

Try Ubuntu 8.04. I use it for 4 months (i also used 7.04 and 7.10 before) and i find it great. I think that eclipse can write PHP with the right plugin.

I don't mean to sound rude, but we can't. Linux distros are a very subjective thing; what works for one person might not work for another. The only way to find out what's best for you is to try several and see what you like. Think of it like flavors of ice cream. I can't very well tell you that Tutti Fruitti is going to be your favorite unless you try it yourself.

If these distributions worked for you, I don't see a reason to keep looking, unless you're just curious. In that case, more power to you.

That's pretty standard hardware. Any modern distribution will work just fine.

All major distributions are pretty much equal on the performance, security and stability front. They can all be tweaked to improve any of the above, and often times the tweaks are the same regardless of the brand you choose. There is no single distribution that someone can say, for instance "THIS is the distribution for security!"

Best of luck in your search. Above all, try and have fun with it. You'll be sampling quite a few different flavors, but they're all the same Linux underneath. What you can do on one, you can do on all.
