    emailing syslogs?

So I have a couple boxes set up and I've been pondering the best setup for moving logs around.

What I'd like to do is send all the critical / relevant logs to a loghost and also get critical alerts / digests via email. It's really this second part I'm getting stuck on, having NO experience whatsoever with email servers. I'd like root@host to have critical logs as well, but I don't want to run an email server on EVERY host, so this is a secondary concern.

I'm really not sure what server to use (I'll probably have to compile it myself anyways) OR how to get mail to my Gmail account. Any thoughts, pointers or discussion would be great.

    Thanks in advance,
    -rb

logwatch is also a nice alternative for this.
