After reading all the Ubuntu hype, Mandriva ended up being much better on my computer
I tried Ubuntu and Mandriva on my new computer and these are the differences on my computer:
- Nvidia drivers work properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu
- Monitor refresh rate works properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu
- Screen resolution works properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu
- Monitor detection works properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu
- Desktop looks much better in Mandriva
- KDE is a much nicer desktop than Gnome
- Firefox has better looking fonts in Mandriva
I can't believe Ubuntu is more popular than Mandriva. Maybe it's because (at least from what I have heard) Ubuntu is light weight and can run on really old computers also, but to me that is irrelevant. IMO, Mandriva is a much more polished, better functioning, more compatible, and nicer looking than Ubuntu.

Try Kubuntu if you don't like Gnome. Or any of the other debian-based distros.

Glad to hear Mandriva works well on your hardware.
I prefer it as well.

- Nvidia drivers work properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu: They work just as well
- Monitor refresh rate works properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu: It works just as well
- Screen resolution works properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu: It works just as well
- Monitor detection works properly in Mandriva - not in Ubuntu: It works just as well
- Desktop looks much better in Mandriva: That's a very subjective thing. (My Laptop Workbench - based on XUbuntu)
- KDE is a much nicer desktop than Gnome: Um no. But I prefer XFCE over both. Flame warriors at the ready!

- Firefox has better looking fonts in Mandriva: I disagree
Once other thing to watch out for is RPM Hell.
When I tried Mandriva I got a failed dependency in an update! (also in Fedora so I assume it's an RPM thing rather than distro specific) and then it kept trying to update and failing so in the end I moved on... This was only on a test box; as a distro whore I have a computer especially for trying out different distros. I keep coming back to the *Buntus
I would in no way call Ubuntu "Light Weight", I would say that it just the opposite. XUbuntu is supposed to be lighter but it is not that different. Fluxbuntu is apparently a lot lighter though.
There was nothing to choose between Ubuntu and Mandriva in hardware detection although (x)Ubuntu is easier to connect to my works PPTP VPN.
I guess my point is; we all have different needs and tastes and fortunately there are distros out there to cater to us

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
