New member/ lost root pswd
Good afternoon (here in the US/East Coast), I am new to this forum and have limited knowledge of Linux. I loaded FC4 3 years ago and since then, really did little with it. I set it up on my kid's computer to minimize the junk that came in on our windows system. However, I've forgotten my root password and I'm unsure how to make the boot disk needed to bypass the root. Can anyone provide any assistance/guidance etc.

A small suggestion since you are a new user. Fedora Core 4 is 3 years old which is considered more than ancient by Linux standards (prehistoric might fit better)!! Try Fedora 9 or you can wait for 2 months for Fedora 10 to be released. You won't believe how much it has progressed in terms of user friendliness. Linux was user friendly back then too, but it didn't make friends as easily as now!!

Many Thanks!
I might just do that. I am in an all out battle with my kids, they want windows for their ipods etc. I've not been very successful with the itunes equivalent, so they are putting a full court press on me to put xp back on the machine. Maybe I can run both. Not sure.

I got to the inital boot prompt, but only had the option of choosing FC4. I'll take a closer look at it. Maybe I'm messing something up

gtkpod
I sure haven't. When I originally loaded FC4 (yes I realize it's now ancient!), there was a gui available but I was no where close to savvy enough to make use of it. I am strongly considering FC9 and this gtkpod now. (that may all be overridden by the user)
thanks!

How old are your kids? A quick search on youtube shows alot of teenagers going nuts over the eye candy on ubuntu with compiz-fusion. I'm not sure what kind of graphics this comp can handle, but you may just turn them yet.
Not that I would advocate choosing an os based on appearance. But kids are kids.

Turn a battleship in a bathtub
They're old enough that it's not easy to impress them. Secretly, they are AMAZED at my prowess, but since the idea may come from me, they'll challenge it everytime.
I'm going to take a close look at what you've mentioned though.
Can I download FC9? A friend of mine gave me FC4 on CD so I've never dwn loaded the OS.
