    Sabayon vs Elive vs Dreamlinux

I am currently using Mandriva and it's good, but I want to try other distros and these 3 seem to be really nice looking. How do they compare to Mandriva overall? Which of these 3 distros is the best when it comes to:

    • Hardware detection
    • Nvidia drivers
    • Stability
    • Ease of installation

    Any responses will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Of those, I have tried elive and didn't really like enlightenment DE, but your mileage may vary. I belive they all come with live CDs so why try them and see what you think...

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

I havent tried Dream Linux but a couple of awnsers on Saby and Elive. I found both easy to install, so theres not realy much difference there.

Stability wise, well, Saby was fine, no crashes or anything (using most recent version). Elive wasnt so good for me. Ive been told its great by other people, personaly, the only E17 desktop ive had any luck with was OzOs. I didnt get a single E17 error in 4 months of it on my laptop.

I didnt have any problems installing drivers on either desktop for grapics cards. However i have seen threads about Elive and 1440×900 resolution problems. If you dont have this resolution though, you should be fine.

Hardware detection is a bit hard for me to awnser as both laptop and desktop that had them installed on were both a couple of years old. Nothing new in either of them. So i cant realy say how good they are with new hardware pieces.

As Elija says though, they all have live CD's so give them a whirl and 'try before you buy' as it were

I found Sabayon very big, as in it had everything plus the kitchen sink installed. I liked Elive but I think it's kind of a niche thing. Very focussed on looks though they do a good job on that.

I've never come across dreamlinux myself so I can't say about that. Sabayon is supposed to be one of the easiest ones to run and requires little or no interaction to get going but you might want to have a healthy amount of RAM and CPU to get it going.

    My own opinions!

Dreamlinux - Why? didn't see anything special or appealing in it.

Sabayon - Tries to do too much. Long install time and long bootup time. Nice when it finally got to the desktop though.

Elive - really liked it, E17 very nice.

As to the original question here's my rankings:

Hardware detection - Sabayon, Elive, Dreamlinux
    Nvidia drivers - ati here
    Stability - Elive, Sabayon, Dreamlinux
Ease of installation - All as easy as each other iirc.

    Sticking with Mandriva meself though.
