Some help in Linux From Scratch?

Hi, I was wondering how I shall manage to innstall the Packages and pathes to Linux From Scratch?
Shall I download them on another computer and then innstall them via a Usb-Momory Stick, and go into for example Mandriva and innstall them useing the Live CD of Mandriva?

    Thanks for all answers.

if you can afford a dedicated partition for LFS i think its a good idea. that is what i do.
you just mount it and do your thing. all you need to do is to make the build chain independent from the host system .

when building LFS you will need binutils, gcc , glibc etc. those are the tools you will need to build the new system(LFS) and they are also present on your host system(lets say Fedora or the LFS liveCD). so when you build them you make sure they are self-sufficient(meaning that they dont need the host system to work)

What I understand is, 'How will you install packages & patched on ur linux system?'

    1. First of all, today's Linux distributions have advanced update managers...like yum in Suse & app manager in ubuntu etc.. Which makes easy for you download & install packages & patches on ur linux systems. What you need to do is just to point the location of the server where the patches are avalable.

    2. Say that you have downloaded something with some format, and when you copy it onto ur linux machine, it automatically determines which application to use to install that package (for ex, if its an rpm package, an rpm extracter & installer opens it) & installes it for you!!

    3. Say that your machine is a dual boot with windows & linux, then if you have downloaded package on windows, mount that partition on linux & access the package.

    4. Say that you have copied package/patch on some other system, as you said, use USB or even access that machine (if networked, access it by FTP, samba etc..) and get the package.

    My way of doing it...
What I suggest is to download packages & patches on ur linux machine itself directly!!

Let me know if you need any help..

Khafa..you mean I have to build the system piece by piece? like build, comparing to windows, the all program files and program system?
..and how do I make sure all these files are independent from the host system?
    ..thanks again..

the idea behind LFS is to build the system piece by piece. you build the compiler , asembler, linker .then the libraries etc.
if you use the book they have in there all the instructions you need to build the system but you need a good background in order to fully understand it

    hi there,

are you talking about the Linux From Scratch project(the one i am referring to here) or something else?
Linux From Scratch(LFS: the one i am talking about ) is a project that helps you make your own Linux "distribution" by compiling everything from beginning to end.

is there another version that could be fully loaded from disk..and not builded piece by piece as LFS need to?
..also..could be linux be loaded on the same partition as windows (that then I gather will be the host?) or it has to be on a separate partition..
    ..thanks again..
